Cotton falls to one-week low on harvest pressure, lower grains
Oct 25 (Reuters) -ICE cotton futures eased to a one-week low on Friday, weighed down by growing harvest pressure, while a retreat in the grains market also weighed on the natural fiber.
* Cotton contracts for December CTZ4 fell 0.35 cent, or 0.49%, at 71.18 cents per lb at 11:01 a.m. ET (1501 GMT). However, the contract was headed for a weekly gain.
* "I think we're seeing some harvest pressure and then you're seeing some pre-hedging pressure ahead of the weekend. The crop as of last Friday was 44% harvested, gathered. I think we'll be well over 50% on Monday," said Keith Brown, principal at cotton broker Keith Brown and Co. in Georgia.
* A weekly crop progress report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Monday showed 44% of the cotton crop was harvested in the country as of the week ended Oct. 20, compared with 34% a week ago.
* "The Chicago markets are down a little bit. It seems like all the crops are slightly lower this week," said Rogers Varner, president of Varner Brokerage, in Cleveland.
* In the grains market, Chicago corn and soybean futures dipped as traders booked profits after two-week highs and set brisk U.S. exports against a bumper U.S. harvest and improved planting weather in South America. GRA/
* The USDA's weekly export sales report on Thursday showed exports of 98,400 running bales (RB) were up 70% from the previous week and up 16% from the prior four-week average.EXP/COT
